In spite of his strong formation in sculpture and painting, Paul Cloutier chose engraving as a medium to express his feelings towards existence. He once said that he was more interested in the trace that remains from human intervention than in the object itself, which is, according to him, too thick, too heavy and soulless to permit any elevation of the mind.
His purpose is to force the viewer’s spirit to move outside of his material conception of the world to explore new territories. His technique is an experimental combination of drawing and sculpture to produce a raised pattern on a printing paper. His compositions end up being subtle but not less challenging
